Robyn Hitchcock And The Egyptians, Globe Of Frogs (A&M)

by Chris Heim

The critically revered Hitchcock and band (with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze) pull off a small miracle on their major label debut by creating a more accessible work that is also richer and more complex than past efforts. Crisp production finally reveals how skillful these musicians are, though that probably will be overshadowed by Hitchcock's quirky, hypervisual, frequently grotesque little tales. This musical Hieronymus Bosch buoys everything up with bouncy, bright, Beatlesque melodies that lure listeners in before they realize it. Hitchcock paints life stripped of its loose-fitting "skin" of civilization and Globe is perhaps his most vivid, cohesive, passionate and funny portrait.
