Robyn Hitchcock
"I Something You"

by Lydia Anderson

Robyn Hitchcock's first release of new material since 1993's Respect finds him in a new situation: recording solo in Calvin Johnson's new studio. Shaped only by Hitchcock's acoustic strumming and malleable voice, "I Something You" is a charming, witty love/not love song ("In the best years of my life/At least I haven't got a wife"), while "Zipper In My Spine" is energized by fuzz guitar and a simple Punk arrangement. But the real gem is the flipside's blue "Man With A Womans Shadow", on which Hitchcock adds moaning harmonica and dips into creepier realms. These three new tracks make the perfect accompaniment for those dipping into Rhino's excellent Hitchcock reissues.
