Hitchcock has been doling out surreal dabs of melody, menace, and mirth since the late-'70s, and Moss Elixir finds him in top form -- even without his longtime backing band, The Egyptians. Hitchcock occasionally gets carried away with his own cleverness, and his dadaesque wordplay is sure to annoy a few non-converts. But these tunes are either so oddly pretty ("Beautiful Queen") or so jingle-jangly insistent ("Alright, Yeah") they resist virtually all quibbles.
