Demme's Hitchcock Pic To Orion

by Kirk Honeycutt

Orion Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to Jonathan Demme's Storefront Hitchcock, a concert film showcasing cult rocker Robyn Hitchcock. The previously reported project was filmed the week of December 9 in New York, and will be released in The United States next fall. The soundtrack will be released by Warner Bros. Records, Hitchcock's label that recently released his album Moss Elixir. Demme filmed Hitchcock's performance in a downtown New York storefront setting with a live audience over two days. The material included some of his more popular songs as well as new works presented for the first time. Demme's previous concert film was Stop Making Sense, an acclaimed 1984 rockumentary on the Talking Heads. Storefront Hitchcock marks Demme's fourth directorial project for Orion, and the first since his Oscar-winning hit thriller Silence Of The Lambs. His company, Clinica Estetico -- in which Demme is partnered with Peter Saraf, Edward Saxon, and Valerie Thomas -- recently produced Ulee's Gold. That was directed by Victor Nunez for Orion. Last week, Universal Studios announced a three-year, first-look production deal with Clinica Estetico. "The content of Robyn's songs are exceptionally visual," Demme said. "He makes movies in our minds with his lyrics. I hope that Storefront Hitchcock will capture the magic of a live Hitchcock performance onscreen for moviegoers."
